Snoring In The News*
Can magnets stop snoring? (Daily Mail, January 2006) Tiny implanted magnets could be a new treatment for snoring. Head and neck specialists in the US have found that once implanted, the repelling action of the magnets can help to keep the airways open. American researchers from the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Clinic in San Jose, California, have shown in tests that the magnets work in animals, and are about to start new human trials in Europe. In the animal research, they calculated the size and strength of the magnet needed to provide the same airway-opening effects as CPAP - around two grams in weight.
Playing the didgeridoo beats snoring (Daily Mail, December 2005) Researchers in Switzerland examined 25 patients who suffered from snoring and moderate obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, both common sleep disorders. Half the group were given daily lessons in playing the didgeridoo, a wind instrument about 1.5 metres long, traditionally made from the trunk of a tree hollowed out by termites. The study, published in the British Medical Journal's online edition, found that those who played the unusual instrument over a four-month trial period saw a significant improvement in their daytime sleepiness and apnoea. |
