Hi all,

My snoring is driving my missus mad, but the tips on here seem practical and logical, so that could be the first steps for me...

Good luck with yours.

Regards
Paul

Josy sorry to hear your tests showed negative as often we can place a lot of hope on these reassuances, having a long history of working nights as a nurse and witnessing many others snore, feel assured you are not alone, although probably the severity and how it affects you may feel you are.

Surgery for snorers, was probably pushed in the past, only to prove it often did little and in the longer term the tissue could grow back and make it be worse than before. Yes do go back to ypur GP and ask for opinions or advice if they have one, also talk to your dentist as they may be able to make a mandiple device to hold your jaw forward, with an expectation of keeping your airway open. But be aware they do not always work, only too often the casuses of snoring is partial closure of the airway, where with OSA it often includes the complete cloasure of the airway, hence the need for cpap to keep airway open.

I also note several drug trials are taking place to aid the opening of our airways, also look at your diet before going to bed cutting out the dairy products as they can cause mucous to build up, along side of that remember alcohol can often cause the muscles to relax more so make it worse. A health Authority in Devon was doing some research on throat exercises as although pavarote was obese, he never snored, and thought due to his regular regime of these exercises it stopped his muscles from fully relaxing or closing of his airway.

Search the webb for throat exercises and osa/snoring several sites in the usa, and south america does make some suggestion of it although some may well be out of date now.

Thanks for your reply Gail - do feel rubbish at the moment! Hubby reckons I should get a second opinion - not sure if it's worth doing another sleep study as I did have the three probes, and the consultant was insistant that nothing showed up. Might make an appointment to go back to my GP and tell her the outcome and see what she suggests.

The consultant also reckons I should get a MAD, but that will have to wait until pay day. Did the snore tests on this website and I could be any one of the snorers, so will be a case of try it and see, but after trying most other things on offer - don't hold out much hope. Hope you get a good result with your second test :)

Hi Josy sorry to hear you feel wretched at the moment. Have you tried the snore test on the home page? It might help you determine where your snoring is coming from and suggest an appropriate treatment. I am in a similar position to you in that my sleep test came back negative - but I only had a pulse oximetry test (on my finger) so i'm not sure that I trust the results. Anyway I am paying to have a second test this week (through this site) and am hoping that it will put my mind at rest. Its worth doing the snore test as there may well be something that you havnt tried yet. Good luck and keep us updated.

Just got back from the Hospital :(

Sleep test results didn't show any signs of sleep apnoea. Not sure what to do now.
The consultant said I must just be one of the 40% of people who just snore, and should just get on with things. He didn't recommend an operation as they can be painful and sometimes not successful.

I won't be staying at any hotels or friends houses ever, don't feel comfortable knowing that I make such a horrendous noise.

Hi Josy

I think the sleep centre along with most departments are obliged to tell you direct of the results, although they may use discretion regarding gravity of results, especialy if it is for more serious health problems. Unfortunatly with OSA there are legal issue and are obliged to inform the dvla of this condition, the clinician in charge of our case, also have an obligation under duty of care to pass onto the dvla our results.

Although this may sound hard and not straight forward, do not worry, from my case I believe it is all about timing, and way we inform them I delayed it until I got the official letter from the hospital I had OSA, then within 1 week informed them in writing, they will automaticaly send out a medical form for you to complete, and although the wording sounded scary, They will investigate your case with the consultant and clinic staff direct. Once treatment commences and as long as you seem to be responding favourably with treatment, you will most surely be told to follow medical advice.

Try and remember your driving licence is a legal document giving you a legal ability to drive on the road, only the police via the courts, or with medical recomendation can it be removed.

Yet again the doctors have messed up my appointment (2nd time). I am being passed between two hospitals as ENT is in one and sleep centre is in another. I was told by the sleep centre that my results would be sent to the ENT, but now the ENT tell me that the results will be given to me by the sleep centre in the other hospital.

Now I am totally confused, does this mean that there is something showing up on the test and have to see the sleep consultant to discuss, or I am having to go through him only for him to tell me there is nothing wrong and refer me back to ENT for further investigation/possible operation? My mind is working overtime, which doesn't help!

After waiting 6 weeks, getting anxious/stressed and booking time off work as each appointment has got closer then to be disappointed, now who knows how long it will be - really sorry for the rant, just needed to get it off my chest..thanks.

Hi Gail
I had my sleep study a couple of weeks ago. had to wear a finger clip, chest strap and nasal canular, it was a bit uncomfortable but managed to sleep - I think? Ended up with a red mark right across my face all day where I had slept on the plastic tubing LOL (hubby slept on sofa so he wouldn't keep nudging me while I snored!). Was supposed to get the results on Friday but they messed up my appointment so now have to wait until mid April. Sounds like you have had a long wait, hope you get some answers - Good luck Very Happy Will keep you posted when I get mine.

Hi Josyjo how did it go with your home sleep test? Did you get the results or are you still waiting? I had my home sleep test done in January and am due to get my results tomorrow (a long wait) Sad My sleep test was very basic - just a pulse oxometer (not sure if thats spelt right!) and just had my finger attached to the machine. And it wasnt through the ENT department, my referal to the chest clinic? where I had a chest xray first to rule out other causes?? So it seems everyones story is different. Let me know how you got on.

Like last message, do not worry about the sleep study, it is painles, although can be uncomfortable with the wiring all fastened to you, but the best part is you are at home, and as such can relax more. When I had mine done in the hospital, I was left in room at the end of the out patient corridor from 5-00pm until 7-00am never saw another soul, watched videos most of the night. due to what I thought of having best night for years, still came back as positive. The equipment although looking light and confusing is designed to take quite a bit of moving & is quiet. Good luck

The home sleep study should not frighten you in any way, and the equipment is specially set up so that you can move about with it on in your sleep without interfering with the recording of data! It will probably be a little microphone like a tiny rectangle that you wear under your nose in the cleft bit between your nostrils and your upper lip, held on by a very thin wire that will go over your ears - think a bit of a doctor's stethoscope, plus a little paperclip-like thingy that goes over the tip of your index finger.

I am sure that you will produce enough whatevers for the data to be recorded in sufficient quantity that a diagnosis can be made and you can get back to living you life fully and without something playing on your mind. All the very best, and IF you have OSA, don't be afraid because we are here to help and welcome to the best club in the world! Good luck, and try not to worry because things WILL get better, and hopefully sooner than you think.
