I posted here a couple of months ago for advice because I was sure my partner was experiencing apnoeas overnight. Anyway, I practically dragged him to the GP, who referred him to the sleep clinic and he has now been diagnosed, with an AHI of 60, and has been given a Remstar M series Aflex machine, if that means anything to anyone, lol.
I have been very impressed with his experience throughout. From visiting the GP to going to the consultant clinic, doing the home sleep study and being given his machine has taken around two months. I guess it really does depend on where you live.
Anyway, he has had the CPAP for almost a week now, with a nasal mask, and the first night seemed really positive. He kept it on for about 6 hours which I thought was great, and although he said he didn't feel any different, he appeared in the kitchen in a very chipper mood after only one attempt to get him up, which is unusual, lol.
However, it's been a bit tougher since then. The second night he didn't sleep well and woke up feeling awful, but after night 3 he said he woke up feeling quite good, with a different kind of tiredness. Since then though, (and we have been apart for the last few nights as we live separately and I've been working) he's been pulling the mask off in the early hours. Last night he said he kept the mask on for about 8 hours but woke up and his nose is all squished and has red marks.
I know it's all normal stuff but we'd appreciate any suggestions to make it easier for him. He usually sleeps on his side, which is very difficult and he feels that the mask is leaking and also pulling his facial hair (he has a moustache and a goatie) so he has been sleeping almost upright on his back which is not ideal. I wonder if anyone has any ideas for side sleepers. He's going to go to the drop in clinic tomorrow and I think he may go for nasal pillows instead of the mask as he was 50/50 which to go for in the first place. I'm not sure that 1 week is enough time to decide.
I saw adverts for the CPAP pillows and have made him one similar to a well known brand that I don't know if I can mention here and we'll try that tonight. It's basically a regular pillow with a C shape cut out of each end...
Sorry this is so long. We have about 1 million questions, lol. I just want this to be as easy and smooth for him as possible and I can't do much else for him but collect information and give it to him... Any suggestions welcome.
Many thanks.
