Hi
Has your GP referred you to a sleep clinic? I can't understand it if he hasn't. I had rhinitis and was referred to the ENT specialist at the hospital and as soon as I said I stop breathing at night he got me an appointment at the sleep clinic at another local hospital. It came through very quickly really, about 3 months and they sent me home with a set of equipment that recorded my sleep at home. When I took it back and they saw the results I got my machine the same day!
I would definitely recommend you go via the NHS, I have nothing but praise for my local clinic and the way they support patients.
Go back to your doctor and tell him that you, your work and your family are all suffering and you want to be referred to the hospital. It will be the best thing in the long run.

I have ResMed masks and currently a Goodknight machine and humidifier. I don't think that there are really any makers to avoid - but I have been supplied with different products over the last 6 or so years, and have always been comfortable. Personally I have a nasal mask and alternate with one that has two maggots up my nose ... perhaps having the choice is a luxury, but my technician is very kind and caring. If you have a choice of makers, seek advice from the rental supplier. Information can always be biassed, but my experience is that customer satisfaction (and therefore loyalty) is what they really want.

Wow thanks for the quick reply, I guess people with OSA are awake a lot! I can wait for the NHS, but it will be about 6 months i am told. So I thought I would go private,as I am getting fairly desperate, but I am not sure if this is really a good idea as I seem to have been presented with a do it yourself solution. I don't know if the NHS machines are as good as the ones you can get privately, I don't know who gives the best back up etc. I think you are right about me demanding a home visit. But which firm should I go with, has anyone any recomendations and are there firms I should avoid? Robert

Hi Robert! Welcome to the world of OSA and CPAPs!
If you live in the UK, would you not qualify for treatment under the NHS - ie they would pay for all or part of your rental? (As I live in France, I am treated slightly differently, but I would NOT expect your doc to be 'on commission' from the rental company.)
Why not ask the company to send a technician to see you to measure you up for the correct type of mask and to answer the many questions you must have. Any company worth its salt should be able to do this for you.
Keep us posted - and well done for getting this far.

Worried about how to choose supplier of cpap |
 |
|
|
I have been diagnosed now like the rest of us with OSA and my doctor referred me to a supplier of cpap machines. He was very keen to say that this was the end of his involvement. I had gone to him privately to speed the process up because my sleeping is so bad. I am worried that he is possibly on some sort of retainer or commission for this firm and I may not be getting the best advice. How do I know which company to go with? Would I get better treatment if I waited the 6 months i am told it would take on the NHS? The firm I have been referred have quoted me £120 for a 3 month trial plus £115 for a mask. I am pretty desperate to get this sorted out, but don't know if this is a good or bad deal. I have been sent out a self measurement form, but I don't know whether to order a nose mask or a full face mask. can anyone help? Robert
