Topic review - UVPP operation done 10th sept 2010

I have had this surgery also (April 2011) and at the same time had a rhinoplasty to re-enforce my right nostril which was collapsing when I was breathing through my nose when sleeping.

I found the UVPP operation to be very effective in reducing my snoring, although it has not stopped completely. This is due to other problems, namely gastric reflux.

The key things to remember if having this op are

a) it hurts like hell for at least 2 weeks afterwards. eating is very difficult and you will not be able to work or speak much.

b) it only cures the snoring which itself is a side effect of a deeper problem ie sleep apnoea

I had the operation as part of "suite" of treatments (dietary, nasal surgery, anti reflux medication) and over the past 2 years the quality of my sleeping and life in general has improved enormously (ie I can sleep through the night, in the same bed as my wife, and only 1 day in 15 do i wake feeling like someone has stuffed my brain with cotton wool).

So I would recommend if you wish to stop snoring, however, it is likely that you will need to consider others types of treatment to cure the problem fully.

Hi Mark. How are things now that it has been 6 or 7 weeks since your op? I would love to know if it has been successful and if your snoring has stopped completely.

Hi Mark - are you able to provide an update as to how things are progressing for you now you are 6 weeks further on? I have heard so many negative reports about the anti-snoring operations I would love to know if it has worked for you and stopped your snoring. Thank you.

well I am a 42 yr old smoker male. I had my uvpp yesterday and they trimmed my soft palate and removed my uvula. It is a bit sore today, but I havesome painkillers and to be honest I thought the pain would be lot worse but its just like a very sore throat. Like I've smoked too much over the weekend. It hurts when i swallow at the moment but can still eat and drnk ok.

My wife says I did not make a noise at all last night and considering my snoring was nearing us to one being a permanent sofa surfer, that was music to my ears. She managedto hug me while i was asleep and no snoring. So despite what i've read and heard the pan isnt that severe as toothache but more uncomfortable. Will see how it goes over the next 7 days. Glad done it at the moment though.
