Hi, I haven't slept for a long, long while with my wife due to my snoring. I've had palatoplasty and uvulectomy procedures carried out but the problem still remains. I have been told that just prior to sleeping the snoring starts and my wfe comments on that and I'm still awake as I can hear her complaining, but I can't hear the snoring. Sometimes the snoring can be that loud she can hear it while I'm sleeping downstairs and her being upstairs. Does anyone know what causes this and whether there have been any successful treatments to cure this? Thanks.

same thing. While me and my wife still sleep in the same bed, I do just as you have described; I snore while still awake but don't hear it ( sometimes I hear it a litte ) If she falls asleep before me I get no complaints, but if I go to sleep first, she shakes me until I stop or wake up. She also snores very loud I have to do the same thing with her. If someone post an answer, please let me know as you can see, I have the same problem.
Thank You

yes please, should i be concerned? My 10 yr old son, his 140 lbs snores while awake or while reading a book and he doesnt seem to know. Or when he is just about to sleep and while sleepin, simply watching tv. I was concerned it might hav something to do w/ his weight but he is not really obese, he is just a heavy growing boy, i had him physically assessed and based on his height & age, he's just 8 lbs heavier. Thanks. any info pls.

to last 3 messages and snoring whilst awake, it may sound silly, but that can be quite common with certain types of snoring, especialy if your trachia or wind pipe has a history of collapsing. That happened to me and still does although not not as often now on cpap.

A tell tail sign could well be a snoring sound along with neck sizes of 16 and a half inches, as is common with OSA, get yourself of to the Docs, and discuss it with them, it may help if you take a tape recording of your snoring, alsong with an epworth score report as is also on this site and able to be copied, it measures quantities of when you feel drowsy, or having a history of falling asleep during the day.

This happens to me usually when I am sat relaxing at the end of the day .... occaisionally during long boring meetings too.. which is embarrassing as it sounds almost as if I am snorting derisively. I am aware of it when it happens as it is loud enough for me to hear. I dont know why it happens but i wish it didnt.

Hi all
Sorry new to this site, what is an epworth score report. I went to the doctors last week and was quite dismissive, just told me to try Sudafed tablets at night which don't work. The only good thing he did was tell me about this site. Have since bought the Rhynil to try and used it for the first time last night, seemed to work so am hopeful.

You can find it HERE-Epworth

The higher the score, the more likely it is you might be suffering from Sleep Apnea

Print off the results and take them to your GP.

My mother has this problem also. I ask her if she hears
it herself but she says that she doesn't.

It sounds just like she is snoring while sitting up.
She always seems to be sleepy and also is
taking numerous meds for blood pressure(atacand
and amlodipine), hypothyroidism(levoxyl),
cholesterol (zetia), osteoporosis(alendronate),
inflammation(prednisone), memory(aricept and namenda),
depression(pristiq), along with baby aspirin, citracal
and centrum.

She seems to always be sleepy but seems to not
have any congestion or problems breathing.

Hi Caregiver,
these sound like the very problems which my late mother had, She would drift in and out of sleep, in a continuous drowsy state, and sometimes would seem to snore when she had her eyes open.
Needless to say, when I was diagnosed with OSA at the age of 44, after suffering for years, I suggested that it could be a genetic condition.
The lack of concentration, memory loss and high blood pressure are also IMO associated symptoms of OSA.

Andy

Hello there, I am new to this site and suffered for past five years now and been under the London Chest Hospital for quite some time. I have used the CPap machine and to be honest believe its "horses for courses" as they say and although it appeared to work initially the sleep apnoea came back with a vengeance when i put weight back on and became stressed for various reasons.

I too have found myself snoring whilst awake and my long suffering partner witnessed this for the first time a few days back. It seems like it in my opinion is occurring as the condition worsens but dont quote me on this. I also am suffering from short term memory loss which I never had before.

I will be returning my CPap to the Hospital shortly and pleading for alternative solutions. From the lack of sleep and feeling down all the time it knocks me for six when catching a flu etc. If anyone can confirm the snoring whilst awake is after a long period or wether when first diagnosed with OSA would be appreciated as its quite alarming particularly when your at work and colleagues hear you snore (thinking you are asleep) when your actually awake.

Regards Des

Des, before you hand in your CPAP - and goodness knows there will be more than enough takers clamouring for it - please do check with your doc if it needs to be recalibrated for your use. Weight gain and loss may well affect the pressure settings required so ask if they would do a titration study to confirm that it is indeed set to your needs before you do anything drastic.

You speak of snoring when awake ... you need to discuss this with the sleep clinic, and also about snoring in general. This could be simply due to your needing a full face mask or a hybrid mask instead of a nasal mask! Please note down the points that you want to raise ahead of your appointment and go through them with the doc or the technician. I can appreciate you are frustrated with the lack of sustained progress with your CPAP machine, but you need to have regular contacts with the medical staff and make them aware of your concerns on a regular basis so that you can work together as a team to get your waking life back on track and your sleep healthier. All the very best, and make sure you get an appointment soon.

Your advise certainly makes sense.

I must admit that I was indeed fed up at time of my original post, as a few clinic appointments were canceled due to the text back system (I text back for new appointment date and somehow it was not registered and so my appointment canceled). I will indeed request for the GP to refer me to the London Chest once again.

I have noted your positive advise and thank you for taking the time to respond. :D
