Paul I don't think there is any quick answer, other than to get your body clock to reverse it self, i.e. don't take that rest mid afternoon, prepare for bed in normal ways, and try and ask yourself if you have any worries that plague your mind when you are resting. When you wake, by all means get up and make a drink, along with divert your attention from any thing that plays your mind, reduce the amount of caffeine, but go back to bed, even if for only that 1 hour, although yes you will wake feeling crap, you still need to remind your body clock the ??? your normal sleep habit. Search things like caucadian clock, wikepedia has a fair article, you will see it can have far reaching affects in the longer term, even start to antgonise our endocrine system.
It is very normal for us all to get up and or have bad nights, if they persist, you may need to ask if there is something else bothering you, as loss of sleep, or change of sleeping pattern often raises other health issues. Anxiety, depression and various other physical health issues, can be behind it, or even cause it.
I have a leaflet on healthy sleep patterns it is written from my psychie days, but will email it to you, so as to encourage non use of hypnotics, and other such habit forming drugs. Do not take any offence, I am not suggesting anything, just hope it can give some help. Also it may still be an affect of osa, and getting stabilised on cpap, although by now I would seriously doubt it, but a question to ask yourself, has your sleep pattern this last few months even before the bad bights, become lighter, than it was say 6 months ago? when I say lighter, do you hear more noises than before, become more alert to certain boises?
