Hi, I `m training for the 2011 LONDON marathon. I have also just started using a CPAP machine. I was wondering if this treatment improves your aerobic capacity?

Athletes and footballers go to high altitude training camps to help them prepare. Does having air pumped into you each night have a similar effect?
Could this be a hidden benefit?

No.
Athletes train at high altitude because there's a reduced po2 in the atmosphere which forces their cardiovascular system to work harder to maintain normal oxygenation within the body. Hence cardiovascular improvement.

Cpap pumps normally oxygenated air in at pressure to stop the airways collapsing and reduces the strain on the cardiovascular system already caused by apnoeas.
