Hi everyone

I recently been diagnosed with OSA and had the mask fitted last Monday and still not able to sleep with it.

Has anyone found Yoga helpful as it is based on breathing technique and I wondered if this has helped anyone?

I have been so tired this last few weeks and not been doing my normal aerobic class and my sleeping seems to have got worse not better. Just wondered if Yoga helps? :)

Frankly I hadn't thought about breathing this way. I don't think yoga can 'cure' OSA but it can help you to relax and think about your breathing so you can feel more comfy in your mask. GOOD IDEA.

I've read that yoga and playing the didgeridoo both help as they both require unique breathing techniques :D

Thanks for your replies.

I've been using the CPAP for a week now and my sinuses started giving me grief and now I've lost my voice. Does anyone else find that the CPAP can aggrevate the sinuses? Strangely I had a really good nights sleep without the CPAP last night.

I've also found that my guts are being blown up by the air being pumped in and in awful pain the next day until it all goes. I've call ed the clininc and waiting for them to call me back.

I don't think the CPAP is very good for my health!!

Ever the optamist!!

It is possible that your airways ... nose and mouth ... will react in the short term when you start xPAP treatment! And it takes time to adjust to the 'help' in air intake!

You've done the right thing in contacting your clinic for an appointment. They will check that the air pressure is correct for your needs for a start. Your 'guts' may hurt a bit at the beginning because they're not used to all this extra 'helpful' air. The sad fact is that you may feel the need to burp or fart more. I've forgotten the original source, but follow the advice .. JUST DO IT!! We all go through this!!!

For the sinuses, it could just be statistical bad luck that it's your time for a sinus flare, BUT if you think it's likely to be the change in your breathing habits because of your CPAP machine (which is what I think it is as well!!) it might be worth seeing your GP or trying an over-the-counter remedy from the chemist in the short term. You could also consider the possibility that another type of mask might be best suited to you ... but if you are NEW to treatment as it seems from your post, you may just have to give your body a chance to react, grumble a bit and then settle down to life - and better health on xPAP!

Stay optimistic, and if you need more advice or info or just to 'get it off your chest', we're here!

I used to do yoga. I started as a way of increasing flexibility for my martial arts, but I found my general health improved and I was less stressed too. My blood pressure dropped too which was a great bonus.
One of my friends who has always been very hyperactive (probably an understatement!) has taken up yoga and has never been so relaxed!

Sinuses. Well, I've always had sinus problems. I've had my nose broken a few times and have a very deviated septum. Initially the cpap caused more irritation and I used a decongestant half an hour before bed for this, but now I'm finding my nose is better than it's been for as long as I can remember. The cpap seems to have improved all aspects of my breathing. I used to be a bit erm 'phlegmy' in the mornings...probably for 25years I had this. Now I'm not at all. I'm really pleased about this.

I think it's maybe just a matter of more time needed to adjust that's needed.

Best of luck :)
