Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me. I am an 18 year old female. I am not overweight at all. For about 2 years I have had this on/off sleep problem. I will have a dream that I am choking or I will be having a dream about something completely unrelated/irrelevant and then I'll randomly start choking in the dream. I will then actually wake up choking. It doesn't feel as though it's because I have stopped breathing more like I've actually choked on something. I will be coughing for a good 5-10 minutes when I wake up before I'm ok again and I will have to have a glass of water to make it ok. I can go months without these episodes happening and then I may have it every night for a week. So the onset of these episodes seems relatively random. Another point to mention is that I am always tired during the day and just think about when I can sleep again. I get ill with colds often too. Would love to know if anyone has an idea about what this is! Oh and I don't snore.

Hi there, let me ask you an embarrassing question: Do you snore? when you wake in the morning do you feel just as tired when you went to bed? Do you have early morning headaches? Or even a neck measurement of than 16inches?( I presume you're female.) There are a couple of questionnaires (Berlin questionnaire and Epworth score)on this website that may determine if you have a risk of sleep apnoea. I suggest you complete and print your results and have a chat with your GP if you are still worried. Good luck!

No I don't snore. Sometimes, not all the time. But I am very tired most days I just think about when I can sleep next etc! Yeah I wake up with headaches and feeling groggy quite a lot, particularly if I nap during the day. I have to have a nap most days. Thank you :) and yes I am female!

Hi there, I am 35, normal weight and snore occasionally and I have exactly the same thing when I often wake in the night choking, having often dreamt that I have swallowed something unusual like a necklace that gets stuck in my throat!
I have done the sleep apnea tests and it says that apparently I don't have it as I don't seem to have any of the other symptoms but when I google this symptom it says that this is what it is. I don't know what to do either.
I get worried that one day i'm not going to wake up!
