Well I just thought I'd say thanks and let you know that we just received a letter to say that my husband is to be given a trial machine in 2 weeks and if he responds well he'll be given a permanent one.
It's a relief, I now hope it all works for him.

Hi - I have just been diagnosed with sleep apnea and like others there is a long waiting list for NHS treatment. I need my car for work ans want to sart CPAP ASAP. Can anyone advise me on which CPAP machine and mask to buy and any idea on what pressure setting to put it on at night?

Look for a autoset (apap) machine that will adjust the pressure accordingly to your needs through the night.

Masks - Are you a mouth breather or do you breathe through your nose ???

If you are a mouth breather you would need a full face mask to cover both mouth and nose .

Just for your nose - nasal masks .

Also may i add you may need a humidifier which will cost extra this will add warm moist air instead of cold air blowing into you .

Theres plenty of cpap company's out there if you are looking for a good company with good customer service then i would recommend Resmed , most hospitals issue there machines and masks .

I feel that we've been really lucky then, hubby had his 2nd appointment today, on the 1st appointment he was sent home all wired up to do a sleep study at home. The 2nd appointment a few weeks later he has come away from with a machine! This is at the Royal Surrey in Guildford. He also was referred at the 1st appointment to the ENT people because of his daytime heavy breathing, that was a week ago and in a weeks time he's having surgery to correct his deviated septum (not necessarily to fix the snoring/apnea but to help with normal breathing). All on the NHS!

It really seems to be a huge lottery. I got tested in early March at home with a pulseox monitor (fingerclip) that downloaded to a memory chip. I was given an appointment in April at Papworth for an overnight CPAP trial and left with the machine the next morning - been on it ever since. Made a huge difference from the very first night - feel 10 years younger. I hope you get your machine soon...
