The first time a humidifier was mentioned to me was when I phoned to say I couldn't breathe after couple of hours on the machine. I was told to try taking a drink and/or spraying water up my nose to see if that helped
Turned out he was trying to save the cost of one as his budget was very poor back then, but I did get one after I tried everything he suggested first

Machines were quite large back then and are now a third of the size and a lot quieter
