Recent septoplasy to correct significant nasal septum deviation to allow better use of CPAP for OSAHS. My concern is I am a health care professional who comes into contact with patients with MRSA on a daily basis, my wound is now MRSA positive and receiving treatment to irradicate MRSA, however, likely to colonise MRSA in my nose frequently due to contact with people with MRSA, despite maticulous cleaniness, we all wash our hands but never think of our noses!!
If my nose is colonised with MRSA am I at greater risk of respiratory tract infection using CPAP, anybody came across any advice?

If your nose is colonised with MRSA then I don't think a saline "flush out" would do it any harm. Bring on the neti pot!!!!!!! :D

Ken
Thank you for the advice, good idea the saline flush before bedtime, to help irradicate the MRSA I used silver and chlorohexadine 4% to pack the nose and it's gone now, maybe I need to think of risk and move to non clinical work for health reasons.

saline flushes of the nose or any other part of the body is comforting, but remember unless at least a 0.9% mixture, it will have little antiseptic benefit, problems with mrsa, the bacteria has alreday colonised, and has shown its resistive to normal antibiotics, by being able to mutate and adapt to most known treatment methods, do talk to your medics and follow there advice.

leng, I am not saying that the saline will flush out MRSA for definite, but it certainly seems to work against whatever causes colds and flu in me, not that I have ever had real flu, the kind that takes you to bed for a week. Up to buying a neti pot in Feb 08, whenever I took a flight anywhere I seemed to catch some respiratory problem for a few days. Since then I have been to Lisbon twice, Barcelona, Paris, Palma and Monastir (Lucky I am retired!) ...and I've never had a problem since.... First thing I do when I get home, or into foreign accommodation is give myself nasal irrigation (the neti pot) followed by a cup of tea....oh the benefits of a travel kettle :D

Check out this article on garlic, not saying it works, but I am a great fan of garlic!

I wouldn't worry about it too much, you have been around MRSA so long without actually catching it, you probably have "natural immunity" anyhow you are in the right place to be for treatment if you do catch it.
Seriously, all the best Ken

Ken yes I also agree with garlic, my wife and I are big fans of it, we cook with it daily, I also believe in its use even uncooked in a sandwich, as a first line of defence against most respiratory infections, I also have read research from France of it having very good properties in dilating the bronshials.

Saline is a very good antiseptic, but what I meant is you have to make sure the strength is correct, alternatly it will aid the spread of most bacteria. Most of my basic nurse training in the 70's, was around strenghths, and was also thought as one of the probable causes of development of such mutating bacteria like mrsa now if dilution rate is too low. Our own bodies mucous mebrane tissue is basicly a 0.9% salinity solution, so yes it is good for you if in the right solution strength.
