I know I snore because my ex boyfriend told me plus friends when we have slept in the same room. I never used to snore but now I am totally paranoid about it. I am dreading meeting a new guy because when he stays over he's going to find it such a turn off. I've not got a clue how bad the snoring is but I know it's usually when I've had a big drinking session. Is this forever, how can I stop it and how do I go about sorting a sleep test?

It does depend on where you live as to where you can seek help. First stop might be your GP, or, if you will confide in the Mods here as to where you live, they could probably tell you which sleep centre is nearest to your home.

Much as you will hate me for saying it, the big drinking session will relax your throat muscles which will give you far more noisy snoring than you might do when dry.

It is wise and responsible of you to take steps to reducing your snoring for your health if not for enjoyable relationships. Be bold, take the next step and ask for a referral to a sleep clinic .... and you could always take the Epworth Test (a questionnaire often used on the web - ANONYMOUSLY) to see if your snoring is related to sleep apnoea or other causes.

GOOD LUCK.

I understand very much.

There are a few clauses to snoring such as Alcohol and Smoking. Alcohol is a muscle relaxant which can cause the relaxation of throat muscles and worsen snoring. If you are a smoker, you can reducing or stopping smoking as smoking can then avoid further weakening of our throat by smoking.

But if you do not smoke or drink at all, you can use some devices to stop your snoring such as Throat Sprays,Nasal Sprays, Nose Strip or Mouthpiece Devices.

Don't worry and you can find out the suitable cure . Smile Smile

I feel very much the same. When I went to australia travelling 10 years ago i assume I didn't snore as no-one ever told me I did and I stayed in shared rooms all the time with no complaint. Then I seemed to become a heavy breather as people would call it. Friends have now told me having shared a room with me that I do snore. I assume it can't be terrible else they would have been nudging me or saying how they couldn't sleep a wink but i am still really embarrassed.

I am single and dread the idea of a new man staying over as I would feel i could not let myself fall sleep for fear of turning into a noisy pig. worse, I am very put off by men who snore loudly so to think that when I am asleep and its out of my control, I am making noise is horrible.

I have tried Rhynil to try to tighten the mouth palate but unless someone sleeps with me I don't know if its worked. anyone else feel the same?

Hi Northern lass,

My missus took tape recordings of me to prove I snored, and believe me, if it was an Olympic event, then I would be favourite for Gold at London 2012. Could you get someone to record you, or even better, if you are worried then take an Epworth sleep test. Do you feel tired all the time, drop off to sleep when watching TV?
Get these things checked out ASAP.

Andy

Hi blondie,

First thing is to go to your GP and seek some advice, don't take "Everyone snores to some extent" as his/her diagnosis. It is an easy way out for the GP, ask to be refered you to an ENT department for further investigation, there may be a good reason for your snoring. However, having said that drink does have a large affect on snoring. If you do get referred to ENT think before you go for any operations as this may not be your best option.

Do you feel tired during the day?
Is it only when you drink or does it just get worse when you drink?
Are you overweight?

These are all factors that you have to think about.
Your questions not easily answered as there are so many factors involved.
Get yourself along to your GP and discuss it with them.
Think about it before you rush into operations etc!

HI
I didn't seek help until i was so tired i couldn't function. I have snored for ever - well it seems that way but definately has got worse in the last 3 years. You know its bad when you stop snoring and your 8 year old son cant sleep as he's never slept in a quiet house before.... Again nobody told me how bad it was and to be honest i don't think they realised as they got used to it. Do as the others have suggested and take the Epworth sleep test but be honest with yourself - i found that what i considered normal really wasnt. Women who snore aren't that uncommon - I think its still unusual for them to admit it though.

Cath

Very true. I am currently living in the same house as another couple. The wife is snoring every night, and trust me, you can hear it through the walls! But when I ask her husband about it, he just says that she makes, and I quote, "beautiful sleeping sounds". Must be love, eh? :D

That was normal when you are tired but if that happening occurs even in a peaceful day and relaxing day and night, I suggest you should go to doctor and consult your health. My friends also telling me that one time, I am snoring, even talking. That was the time that I had so much tiresome day and they understand it, because they accept me for what and who I am. The funny thing about this is, they also snoring.lol We are just laughing at ourselves.
