I have been doing CD 2 for nearly 3 weeks now and am really enjoying myself. I just love the tongue twisters and my lads love to join in with me when I am singing. They don't actally sing the same sounds, they have their own variations - buh dug guh became bu-gu-ger and caused much hilarity as my 23 year old strolled around the house singing that.

I have had the pleasure of having accompianment as well, with one son doing beat box and the other one rapping as I sang le,lo,lay,la, lu, lilly, lilly. You really had to be there to appreciate it. It was very tuneful, even if I do say so myself. My 21 year old thought it was so good it merited being videod for you tube.

Like several others I do my singing at the kitchen sink, when I am making the dinner and washing up, the kitchen is my domain anyway, and due to living in a household of men it is the place I am most likely to get peace to sing as they hardly ever venture in. Laughing

I am hoping that I will see some improvement in my apnoeas, but time will tell. I will wait until have finished CD3 and then try a night without my Cpap to see how it goes.

It is a real shame that my NHS didnt know anything of these exercises when I was diagnosed, they just seemed to write me off to a lifetime of Cpap useage. I plan to bring it to the attention of the Nurses at the Sleep Clinic when I go for my check up in December. At least then they will have the option to advise other apnoea sufferers of the possible improvements they can effect for themselves.

Ruth, I had to laugh....Personally I think the lu lilly lilly (CD2 Ex#9) the hardest exercise of all, but that's just the tip of my tongue, I guess!
I mentioned the exercises at my sleep clinic, and they went all coy on me. The nurse had never even heard of nasal dilators (I was using nozovent at the time)....so I wouldn't hold your breath!
Best of luck with the exercises, and try not to give up...all the very best
Ken.....I'm going to do mine right now Very Happy

It's great to hear other people having success with the Singing Exercises and I missed this from the Daily Express a couple of years ago.....

https://www.express.co.uk/printer/view/2171/

Still, as Ms Ojay says in the article, it does not do for everyone! Ken

Just a quote from Dr Elizabeth Scott's book "The natural way to stop snoring" It was she who first noticed that professional singers tended not to come to her with snoring problems,
Quote:
If you are overweight you will get most benefit from these exercises if you also lose weight. You will then lose the fat that surrounds the throat and lies in the soft palate and be left with a wider, muscular throat and well-toned soft palate

In one of her case histories in the book, the bloke is in her opinion 1 1/2 stone overweight, but practically gives up snoring after he has lost half a stone combined with the singing exercises!
Although it was published 14 years ago, it's a good book to read. Ken

Last month, I was two weeks in Tunisia, and I tried to do my singing exercises every day. As I wasn't really sure who occupied the nearby rooms in my corridor, I was reluctant to do them in my room. So, just as it was getting dark, about 5.30 p.m. I went on the hotel roof and sung them there. There were a couple of occupants on balconies on the fourth floor of the sister hotel that looked across, but I dodged out of view. After the third day though the management had locked the door onto the roof :( :o
The exercises that I would sing are the tunes from Dr Elizabeth Scott's book, as they are easy to do without backing, which you need for "Singing for Snorers" There are five tunes, each one needs to be sung three times, but they are easy to remember, such tunes as "Bobby Shaftoe" and "Early one morning", so after the third day, I would sing them on the main road, if no pedestrians were around, on my way to the internet café. No doubt the odd taxi driver would think it strange, but they would only hear it for a few seconds :) There was just one instance where I got caught out...I was walking by the mainroad alongside this olive grove on my way back from the village singing to the tune of "Good King Wenceslas" every note to the sound of "hee" , the "h" being pronounced more as the "ch" in the scottish word "loch"...I was really bellowing it out when I got overtaken by a tourist "Noddy train" with all the occupants shaking their heads and laughing....I was going to shout out "it's for health reasons" but in the event I couldn't get it out for laughing myself :D :D :D ...It didn't put me off though, I was still there the following evening...with a vengeance :D :D Ken

Hi Ken I have been looking at singing for snoring recently as I recently mentioned my problem to my GP (ie sleeping alone after hubby took to the spare room) Doc gave me a nasal spray and I have got the nozovent dilators but he says I still snore. I know its bad when his door is pushed right to by the morning. So I was thinking of getting the CDs and see you have the ones I was looking at.
I joined this site quite a while ago but had forgotten about it for a while and decided to take a look and searched on singing, hence I found your thread which has made me chuckle.
Looks like it is worth taking a chance on trying them to me.

Jay

Hi Jay
I remember your postings re Cure Snore back in 06...I take it the liquids no longer work for you. Did you ever consider that you might have O.S.A? Do you get excessive daytime tiredness, and have you tried the Epworth test? If you haven't already had one you may need a sleep test.
http://www.britishsnoring.co.uk/sleep_a ... _scale.php

As I said in your other posting, I think the Singing Exercises are great if you are prepared to do them every day, or even most days. It is difficult for most people to ascertain the true basic cause of their snoring, I think mine was nose connected..a couple of the exercises do concentrate on the nasopharynx area. The singing exercises themselves are not at all like regular singing exercises...they can sound a little bit weird at first Remember that you are strengthening the soft palate, the base of the tongue, the palataopharangeal arch (that hold the Uvula) and other essential areas. I live in the middle of a few terraced houses and have warned my neighbour on both sides. Fortunately (perhaps) I live on my own. Just be "up front" about it if you are going ahead with the exercises. As I have said before the benefits are not hugely noticeable for most people until you have been doing the course for about six weeks, you just have to stick at it!
My neck measured 17 inches back in 2005, but I measured it a few weeks ago and it is now 15 1/2 inches. I still use "Jala neti" most days and I sleep on a "V" pillow which sort of stops you sleeping on your back, and I stick a dilator up my nose every night. If I wake about 5.30 a.m., which I do most mornings then I open the bedroom window and the bathroom window for 30 to 60 seconds just to change the air a bit, otherwise I get a very slight headache (maybe it's all in the brain  ) later on. I often take my dilator out at this stage and leave it out for the remaining couple of hours :D
Good luck if you do go ahead and buy the discs Ken

Ki Ken
Thanks for that. Re your shrinking neck size. Can I ask if you have lost weight in general. If you have well done :) I know I do need to lose weight. am probably a stone over my top ok weight. Also I have lost inches as we do as we get older, and being only 5.2 1/2 to start with it does not help any. ( I am 5.1 now according to doc. :(

Hi Jay

In 2004 I was 15 stone 4lbs, When I picked up my overnight sleep study in Oct 05 I was 12st 9 lbs, Most of 2005 I was listening to Paul McKennas CDs nearly every day. I have never been on a diet as such, and never counted calories, never believed in low fat this and that (our brains are 60%fat...bring on the saturated fat!) Between that time and most of last year I was round about 14 stone, and am at present 13 stone 8.5 lbs (with nothing on but the radio  ) I am 6ft tall and my BMI which I printed out, but can't find at this moment is 26 point something. I am definitely in the overweight category but not too much. I believe that reducing carbohydrates is the key, but we all like carbs so reducing portions is the key really. I have tried to get the amount of sugar down in my endless cups of tea and coffee and often put sweetners in instead, but do sweetners cause alzheimers? :? ) I try to restrict myself to one slice of toast at breakfast, and my meal about 6 pm will maybe have two small boiled new potatoes, or home made chips out of a medium sized potato.........If you don't cook more, you wont be wanting more!...this is easier for me 'cause I live on my tod.
Most of the dieting industry is a scam, and the bottom line is always money, even the recommendations of the government and Health Service are dubious in my opinion, why is obesity on the increase, if so called "healthy eating" is good for you?. Anyhow, it's up to the individual what they believe, and everyone seems different, when I see young kids who are still at school, they are scoffing all the wrong things, but their bodies and hormones are probably using up all those foods for growth, a lot of them look like stick insects, they are so skinny(shock, horror!!)
If you are interested in learning about low carb then "The Calorie Fallacy" by Barry Groves is IMO very accurate even if it was writted in 1994...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Calorie-Fallacy ... 791&sr=1-4
I have ordered a spare copy because friends and family often want to borrow books, but getting them back is another issue  Cheers for now Ken

Well done Jay
When you get the 3 discs, read the literature and listen and sing with the tutorial on CD1 for the first few days, this means starting on track 11, then when you feel confident to do the "straight run" this is the beginning of the disc (tracks 1-10) do that... As I said most people don't notice a teriffic reduction in volume of snoring till about six weeks into the programme, but you never know, you might be the exception :) All the very best with it, and your weight loss..I am sure the little kitten will arrive given the patience....Cheers Ken

Great stuff!
I ordered mine one afternoon and they arrived the morning after, Alise Ojay is great, she doesn't mess about :)
You might like this quote from the Daily Telegraph 3 years ago....
Quote:
Malcolm Hilton, an ear, nose and throat specialist and director of the "Singing for Snorers" clinical trial, says the dreaded noise - whether it sounds like a wild boar, an angry rhinoceros, a chainsaw or a mongoose - comes from "turbulent airflow that makes the structures at the back of your throat rattle".

This usually happens because the soft palate, the area at the back and top of the mouth, is too relaxed. It (and sometimes the tongue) then "flops" backwards when you are prone, causing a partial obstruction and making the air whistle, honk or roar as you breathe. Smoking or drinking too much alcohol can contribute by relaxing the muscles. Being overweight is also a factor, as the extra flesh around your neck presses down when you lie on your back, narrowing the opening.

Ojay has come up with a set of vocal exercises, to be performed daily over three months, to tighten the lax muscles that affect the soft palate, tongue, nasal passages and palatopharyngeal arch (at the back of your mouth, where the dangly bit, the uvula, hangs). "When we sing, we use certain muscles to make different sounds, tunes and pitches," says Ojay. "It's like going to the gym and lifting a weight again and again: repeating these sounds tightens these muscles, so they no longer vibrate so much."

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/33478 ... -tune.html
All the very best with your efforts..Ken

Day 4 update
Did the exercises straight through from tracks 1-11 tonight TWICE lol
Think thats easier than doing it with her on track 12 etc.
Finding it easier each time so fingers crossed. :D
Probably need a bit more gusto yet though.
