Sian, hi! I had posted just prior to your post in regard to the same thing.. I have an update, albeit mild, regarding this.. I, too, was in tears... very emotional, very upset... I would call my best friend 2000 miles away (which was her birthday yesterday) and barely conversating as one) i can't talk due to the congested-like feeling and two) because i've been so emotional over the uncomfortable frustration to the process. Like your husband, I had my cousin peek up my nose to confirm what I saw: a strange looking "thing" (?) up each nostril which I thought was just the turbinates (I had the reduction in this case) and that they were uber upset over being worked on. Well, I went back to my ENT yesterday for my first check up (being 6 days post-op) and first he numbed my nose and then applied these pliers-like things up each nostril and removed the things that I was seeing up there! I wasn't able to take a peek but my mom whom was with me had said they appeared to be these almost dime sized gel filled balls! The doctor never told me anything such as splints were going up there, and instead he said that these were membranes he was now removing. Ok, I know being the more creative type that medicine was not my thing, but my brother is and even he was saying that these must have been a more modern version of a splint. He vacuumed out the nose and removed some more who knows what, but I couldn't even tell you how much better I would have felt mentally and emotionally knowing that these devices were contributing to my frustration. So, being now a day later, I still can't breathe properly through my nose. My right nostril was the more difficult one prior to the surgery as it was the deviated side, and still, it's not budging in regard to getting proper air through. As my doctor said, "it's mad". So, what I meant to add was that I wonder if you do have splints up there. I had no idea at all and was feeling absolutely MISERABLE to it. Now, I'm just waiting to get some air through my nose. I miss being able to smell and taste and sleep? Forget it. I'm up until 4 or 5am and wake up at 11 like clockwork. I know it's only been 7 days but I'm curious as to how long most people had to wait to get an ACTUAL breath of air through their nose. Sometimes it's difficult to be optimistic of the advantages of this recovery when you feel so not good during it.
Hi - I'm so sorry i never replied to your post i have just returned to the site for the first time! How are you getting along? It's been 4 weeks since my op and I am so happy! My nose cleared after about 2 weeks and my smell and taste are better than ever!!!
I went to my GP in the end about the things i saw up my nose and she confirmed it was just swelling and mucus, etc, etc, YUCK!! I don't want to gross anyone out but some extremely strange things have come out of my nose in the weeks since my op but I think it is just my body naturally healing itself.
I think that compared to some of the stories i have read on here, i had a pretty easy time. My best advice is to keep up with the nasal douche for 3 weeks (I got a syringe for the early days as there was no way I could inhale anything....far too blocked up! The douching is awful but it works and I have to use nasal drops twice a day but it is a small price to pay to be able to taste again!
I have my post-op check up on 17th Jan and I can't wait to thank my surgeon...at first i thought he was a butcher but now I am eternally grateful!
Good luck to anyone who is having or has had the surgery!
Sian
