Just had my Septoplasty operation and all went well,so far. The most uncomfortable bit i found was the taking out of the swabs up my nose, but its very quickly done. I had it done in day surgery on the NHS started at midday home by seven. Now dealing with the odd nose bleed and steaming every few hours...but im well, now just chilling and enjoying a rest.
:)

I had my septoplasty and turbinte reduction last monday 1 August 2011. I highly recommend having this procedure done, its only been just over a week and i can breathe and most importantly sleep much better. My septum was deviated quite badly and touching the other side of my face so this nostril was not really functioning at all. The other nostril was blocked as enlarged turbinate making up for the other. So for me I was waking up many times during the night with dry throat etc. I was very nervous about surgery as i havent had any surgery since i was child and im now over 30. I was made to feel relaxed, surgery was done. I didnt have splints but I bled a bit so they used packing and was kept in overnight. I didnt enjoy having the packing removed its not really painfull as such but s strange sensation. I was on strong ibuprofen and paracetomol for the pain and had number of nasal sprays including saline rinse for the nose.
You will have to breathe out of your mouth for couple of nights but for me that wasnt a problem as i was doing that anyway.
I still have scabs and stuff up my nose for the time being but I can breath a huge amount better and im happy i had this done. My only regret is not doing it sooner.
Hope this helps others who were anxious like myself.

Hi, I had this op done and reductions too and that was 19 days ago but for the past couple of days, all I have been able to smell is smoke or a burning smell. Everywhere I go.

Tonight I have just noticed lots of bloody mucus up my nostril which had the 100% blockage so ot sure what is going on! I had my op done Peivately and was given Otrivine to use for 14 days, no advice on douche or steam, infect told to avoid steam baths. Since the Otrivine stopped, my nose has been really sore and dry.

Hi, had my septoplasty 6 days ago and have had the usual experiences discussed here - however, one thing that doesn't seem to get mentioned is that the worst problem I've been experiencing (from about day three) has been a rather nasty smell.

I've spent the last hour or so scanning the 17 pages of this forum and the only time I've seen a nasty smell mentioned was when someone said they had an infection - any thoughts or whether this is likely to be the case or is this horrible smell just not something people discuss? Mind you, they've been pretty graphic about everything else on here...

Hi all,

Had my sepotplasty surgery on 4th Oct 2011, also included shaving of the turbinates. Surgery went well, woke up in recovery felt fine. Went up to my ward and about 3 hours later my nose stared to bleed. I had an ice bag and a plaster under my nose. I could breath but I kept asking my husband what that awful smell was!! He couldn't smell it so I just thought Yipee I can smell things again! :D

But unfortunately this this was not the case for me, 2 days at home and my right nostril was bleeding and my left had green grunge out of it, I constantly had a nose bag under my nose and went through 2 boxes of tissues! I just thought this was the norm because of such a simple op really. I was in agony of 5 days and was popping my pain killers like the were sweets. Eventually I went to A&E with my hubby and I was told I had and infection and had to have another op!! I went back into to hospital on the 10th to have another op. I was in 4 days and on intravineous drips. I recovered well and was home on the Saturday. I has a holiday already booked on the 19th Oct, the ENT dept said it was ok to fly. So I went was ill again 3 days in, and had to get my antibiotics. My nose is sore, my cheeks and jaw hurt, my palate is till numb from the 1st op. So cut a long story short I am really fed up!!!! I am due to see the ENT again on Thurs 3rd Nov, so I will update this post and let you all know. I think I was just unlucky with my op as I did loads of research on this.
I really dont want to scare anyone into not having this, but wanted to let you all know that things can go wrong!! :(

Hi all.

It's Claire again, as promised I said I would post after I saw the ENT dept on the 3rd Nov 2011.

Well it seems that I am on the mend, :D. They said that I would has some discomfort still and slight swelling. Also my hubby is happy as he said "we can now talk about something other than your nose"! (cheek). Anyway, bottom line is, if you don't feel right after your op go back and see them as I did. Good luck everyone!! Claire :D

Hi all,
I had septoplasty and sinus surgery done 2 days ago in Guys London. Went in in the morning, op before lunchtime, was in surgery for just over an hour (as far as I can work out) and in recovery for about 2,5 hours as my nose kept bleeding afterwards and I felt dizzy and headachy. Probably due to nurse not noticing the drip attached to my hand was on my stomach underneath a blanket when they wheeled me out and it wasn't until a second nurse turned up to check up on me that they discovered this. How bad is that!!!
Was allowed to go home later that afternoon with a bag from pharmacy full of stuff (sinus rinse, nasal drops and cream) although no proper explanation of when to start using it all. Surgeon told me post op (while I was still a bit dozy in recovery) that I've got some self-dissolving nasal packing up my nostrils and that this will dissolve on it's own in few days time. Anyone has any experience with this?? Well it's been 2,5 days now and packing must still be there as I feel completely bunged up, not able to breathe through nose at all, just a lot of presure inside, like having the worst cold ever. Mucus, blood & other gunk bubbling away in my nose and dripping back of my throat, not pleasant! Nose still bleeds a little, so need to keep the gauze bandage under and have a pressing need to blow my nose which I know I can't! (don't know when I can though!)
3rd night of more less upright sleep awaits me - not looking forward to it as the first two were a nightmare and didn't get much sleep at all. Breathing through mouth is awful and makes my already sore throat drier and hurt even more, need to sip water every half an hour or so. Slightly sensitive top front teeth too, apart from that no visual bruising or much swelling, just a bit on the nose and it feels a bit tender.
No post-op check up scheduled - aparently I don't need to go back until my next ENT appointment in 2-3 months time which I'm to receive in post! Is this normal??

I had the septoplasty done on Tuesday the 6th. It is now Friday the 9th.

I dont think I had anything removed. I have self dissolving stitches in, liket he guy above me.

I have a lot of swelling, just feels like a really blocked nose. So sleeping isnt great.

I slept upright for 3 nights, seen my local gp today and he said thats just to encourage mucus and crap to come out instead of being bunged up in my nose so it shouldnt be a problem to sleep normally (on my side) tonight.

First nights sleep was fine, but the second was awful, woke up at every hour with a bone dry mouth, having to drink water. Got really dehydrated so woke up with a banging headache, and sore stomach, which led to diorreah because of the dehydration. Felt shit the whole day.

Third nights sleep was better, woke up maybe 3 to 4 times but woke up with slight headache but then took tablets and had a shower, feel great apart from the bunged up nose.

I have to go back in 8 weeks time, the swelling can take 10 - 14 days to go down they said. Not sure if I can cope with 14 nights of crap sleep! But hopefully sleeping on my side will help.

Biggest advice I can give is take the pills/medacine they give you! Even if your not currently in pain. Helps you sleep and feel less crap.

Anyone who got the self dissolving stitches procedure on here? I want to know how the average of long it can take to be able to breathe through your nose because so far ive not been able to test any results! :(

I had septoplasty with minor turbinate reduction 6 weeks ago.

Day surgery all went OK on the day. The painkillers took the sting off the pain which was mainly toothache in my front upper teeth.

I felt quite ill for about a week and couldn't unblock my nose at all. I did the nasal douching thing which was horrible and seemed to make things worse some times.

My nose bled slightly and wept fluid for a couple of weeks and then suddenly gushed clear pinkish fluid. I went back to the hospital A&E dept; I thought something was wrong ( I was right ). They admitted me for a couple of days and I had IV antibiotics with pain killers all the time.

I think the bed rest helped a lot; I put on an eye mask and some soft music on my ipod and simply ignored the world for two days other than the odd prod from a nurse. I felt quite well and went home with antibiotics and naseptin.

Over the next few weeks I got slowly better and life is now incredibly good.

My nose is still a little sensitive if I knock it and I sneeze a bit these days because I am so sensitive to some smells. Occasionally I get smells so strong it burns my nose and the very cold weather has me wearing a scarf over my face as my nose nearly freezes off - it's getting so much air.

For about 4 weeks I was worried that I had made a mistake in having the operation - I was quite ill. But now I am so glad I had it done. It's like a new lease in life with easy breathing, sleeping well, less snoring and food never tasted so good.

Can someone please tell me approximately how long I will have to wait for a turbinate reduction/septoplasty. I am yet to be put on the waiting list as my ENT insists I see an allergist first so I would like an idea, as I have exams in May/June and if I don't get this done in time I won't be able to do them, as my snoring severely disrupts my sleep.

Thanks

I had my septoplasty August 15th '11 under the nhs, I was 16 at the time, and after waking up, I had dressing up my nose, and over it. Which was a little odd to wake up to, and this was my first experience of anaesthetic. When I woke up I was happy to eat straight away which apparently most people aren't. A few hours after being awake my dressing was removed, which was like two little tampons up my nose, I was told that a little blood would come out, and at first it didn't, but after a few seconds it streams out. That was the only blood which I encountered afterwards. For the following week and a half I had to wear gauze dressing under my nose, which was fixed around my head with a bandage.

I didn't find it particularly painful, and on that first day I was fine, just tired and dreary from the anaesthetic. But it was the next day I felt it, it was more like the worst cold I'd ever had. I couldn't taste my food, had difficulty sleeping because I was so bunged up, and this began to tire me out. On the 3rd or 4th morning in, I began to experience a pain in my ear, which I acted upon immediately and went to the doctors and found out I had an ear infection, and whilst I was there we discussed the yellowy discharge I was getting from my nose, I had also encountered an infection in my nose, which is quite common and nothing to worry about, and it's not anything bad, it just feels like a snotty/runny nose and that's what the gauze is for, to prevent it spilling out. I had to change my dressing a few times a day because the dampness became a little uncomfortable. The whole process was more of a discomfort and annoyance than a pain, and nothing to worry about at all. It lasted a week and a half, the worst bit was the nasal douching, which consists of putting warm salt water up your nostrils, and the process of the scabs and stitching coming out was quite disgusting, but again, not painful. And also, not everybody has stitches, I had a fracture in my septom.

You are bound to experience a numbness to your septom and the tip of your nose for a few months, but it doesn't take long to come back, and once everything's done and dusted it's worth it. Because I no longer snore, and I can also breathe so much better. I hope this has not put anybody off having the procedure, it's genuinely nothing to worry about. Like I say, it's pain free, it's just annoying!
