Tomed SomnoGuard® SP Soft

The latest innovation from Tomed. The new SomnoGuard SP Soft mandibular advancement device (MAD) is a two-part adjustable appliance with improved comfort and greater durability.

Two-part incrementally adjustable mandibular advancement device

Each of the two identical hard polycarbonate trays is filled with a soft copolymer which, when heated, takes perfect impressions of the teeth for a secure and comfortable fit. The connecting mechanism is on the cheek side of the device rather than the tongue side so the design provides unrestricted space for the tongue. From a choice of six different lenghts, a pair of equal length connectors are fitted, one either side of the device, to couple the two parts together to a maximum advancement of 10mm.

SomnoGuard SP Soft can be worn by patients with retrognathia (a receeding lower jaw / weak chin).

Specific features :

  • Moulded easily at home in about 10 minutes one tray at a time.
  • Can be moulded over and over again.
  • Comfortable and small.
  • Incremental advancement of the lower jaw up to 10mm.
  • Impression material in the channels grips the teeth firmly.
  • Excellent retention in the mouth during sleep.
  • Suitable if you have a few missing teeth.
  • Very low bite opening, i.e., the distance between the upper and lower incisors is only about 2 or 3mm.
  • 2-piece design allows side-to-side movement of the jaw.
  • Mouth breathing possible - useful if you have a cold.
  • No metals used.
  • Spare set of connectors included.
  • Lightweight and durable construction.

Please note: Although this oral appliance is manufactured in two versions: SomnoGuard SP Soft and SomnoGuard SP Hard, we are only offering the SP Soft to the general public. The SP Hard version is rather difficult to mould and only a dentist or doctor should carry out the fitting following appropriate training.

The lining of the SomnoGuard SP Soft is made from a transparent copolymer - the same lining is used in the Tomed SomnoGuard AP. The impression material provides a firm grip on the teeth after moulding and is more comfortable than the SomnoGuard SP Hard.

Review : I am a veteran snorer of twenty years. Last week my dentist fitted a Tomed SomnoGuard soft, and though my 1st night's sleep was a bit broken...I slept for 6 hours without moving on the nightfollowing. I did feel that the expertise of a dentist is useful in fitting the device for me anyway, and I have no discomfort. Whether I have stopped snoring...my energy levels will reveal as time goes on. My only companion ; my dog, is unable to tell me !

Review : This device certainly did stop me snoring. I have noted a few points which may be of interest. You need to take care and read the instructions a few times to ensure you get a good fit. Don't trim off the unused fixing points until you are sure you have tried the device for a few days (it is possible to fit the device the wrong way so the lower jaw is pulled in instead of out). When the device is put in and you turn the light out for the first night it feels like you have your mouth full but over the coming weeks the device is less obtrusive as the brain gets used to it being there. I certainly did not feel any gagging feeling at all and I never feel the device could restrict my breathing in anyway. I have found that on a few nights I have taken the device out and placed it next to the bed without knowing. Putting in the device and taking it out in the morning still gives an aching sensation which goes after a few mins. There is also a pulling sensation on the top front teeth which I suppose is to be expected. I would suggest mentioning it to your dentist on the next check up so they can ensure the tooth position is not changing or deforming. If my mouth is dry (after a few beers) then the device can wake me up early due to discomfort. It's expensive but it works. I just hope the device is robust enough to last. I have not looked into the cost of spares as yet. If I have any issues with the device I'll try to remember to post it here.

Review : I suffer from sleep apnia and normally used a CPAP machine. I decided to try the new MAD whilst travelling to Prague. I had little difficulty forming it and although I do have teeth irregularities each piece was quite a tight fit. However, I haven't managed to use it for more than a couple of hours sleep (although this could be beneficial). For me there appear to be two problems. The centre points of each set of teeth do not naturally line up. That places a twisting action on the straps. I also have a tendency to sleep with my mouth open. For me, what was a tight fitting on the teeth when I started sleep was very slack when I woke and the devices had parted from my teeth. I have tried the device and two nights with the same effect. I also suffered from some jaw joint pain on one side, probably due to me teeth non alignment.
