Peterborough City Hospital - does not offer apnea treatment

Post by Ian Welstream » Fri Apr 03, 2015 1:58 pm

My Gp referred me to this hospital and I waited 14 weeks to be seen and the appointment i attended was with a nurse who offered me "an at home test" saying that if treatment was needed ie CPAP then I would be re referred to Papworth Hospital which some 50 miles from my home. This would mean a wait of 5 -6 weeks, probably. If the test proved positive then DVLA would be informed and I would not be able to drive until treatment began.

The situation was totally unacceptable so I refused to take the test. Fortunately I was able to self refer myself privately to another local hospital, was seen very promptly by an ENT consultant, properly examined further problems found. I attended an overnight sleep clinic within days which confirmed serious OSA. CPAP therapy began very promptly.

What a difference - matter has been referred to local MP

Yes, that is the way to go if money is no object.
However, the rest of us has to wait for the NHS who try their best, though it could be improved a lot with proper funding.
At one time the government threatened to stop funding!
But that was many moons ago and I can't even remember which government it was, though I think it was Thatchers lot!
All you have to do now is become compliant before your next visit to the clinic.

What about finding another hospital close by?

You can be referred to another hospital, but as with most hospitals it may take time or you get treatment. Most NHS hospitals have a waiting list and after you are seen there is usually at least three appointments before you get the machine and treatment, these can be over several months.
Personally, I think the NHS could do a lot better but there are those that would argue about it!

I found a hospital nearby which was Boston, by checking out the ENT specialists on their private wing website. Rang them and because I had a referal letter from my GP anyway I was seen by the consultant of choice, within days! Cost £250 and then put back onto NHS (my choice)

My Apnea severe if not treated it could have killed or maimed. Blood desat levels over 60.What price do put on it!

Cannot fault the treatment and support I have now. Phillips very attentive too.
