Cant get beyond stage 1 sleep

Post by sixstringsting1 » Sun Jul 09, 2017 12:15 am

Hi Guys,

feeling desperate with my sleep problem...I have been diagnosed with insomnia and moderate sleep apnea and have severely delayed REM sleep. Airways have been checked by ENT and are clear and I have a low BMI reading and no apparent signs of obstruction. I be short of breath even during speech and often find myself taking deep breaths. like many with sleep disorders I have been around the mill a bit and have lost my job and negatively impacted on areas of my life. A life without rest and just been living mentally and physically exhausted with this.

I wonder if my sleep Apnea is not obstructive at all and could it stem from an underlying respiratory problem?
I had been put on a CPAP machine from which I had no improvement in quality of sleep in the months that I had it.

Cheers for reading guys and any feedback is greatly appreciated

Hi Dan,

During the night you might be getting central apnoeas which is not obstructive, rather it is more like your brain forgets to send a signal to make you breath. That is the simple explanation.
This would not stop you getting enough breath through the day though.
The ENT and Chest Clinic need to work together to find out what is behind this.
It might be anything affecting your lungs, but you need to get it sorted.
Ask your GP to send you to the Chest Clinic.
Have you been for a Sleep Study, or did you do a home study?
Anyway, I think you need to see a specialist.
As for not being able to sleep, you also need to see a specialist about that as well.
Make then aware that it is suspected you have Sleep Apnoea as they might give you sleeping tablets that should not be taken by people suffering with Sleep Apnoea.
Often not being able to sleep is treated by following a strict time for going to bed and eating at night times etc, they tell you to stick to a timetable very strictly so as your body knows when it is supposed to sleep, however, life these day does not allow such things to happen, so it usually ends up down the tablet route.
Go see your GP and ask him why you run out of breath when speaking at times, this does not sound good!
There are a few things it could be, but I am not a doctor and I would not like to guess what it might be.

Good luck and let us know what they find.

Thank you Sleep 2 snore,

I forgot to mention that my diagnosis of sleep apnea and severe delayed REM sleep was made with a sleep study PSG which was taken home. Thank you for you reply, I am in process of trying to get respiratory tests done privately as i am on waiting list to see specialist again and in 2 years have seen consultant twice.

The possibility of central sleep Apnea was on my mind as I dont snore, have low BMI, Have clear airways. They type of sleep apnea was never described to me during consultation. What has really surprised me was that consultant has kept me on a daily sleeping tablet despite this diagnosis...I will indeed look into this so thank you
